In a community collaboration in 2020, we translocated a 20-year old Tusker from community-owned Tembe Elephant Park to Somkhanda Game Reserve. The relocation not only aided in alleviating pressure from the growing population in Tembe Elephant Park, but also plays a significant role in improving the genetic diversity of the elephant population in Somkhanda Game Reserve.

Community-driven conservation plays an essential role in the protection and restoration of flagship species such as elephant. A project like this highlights the potential for communities to collaborate in the restoration of wildlife biodiversity.
